Hello, I have a client that has been complaining about things being very slow on there network and from what I can tell it is, there main applications are slow such as Paperclip, this database program, and outlook.
So I started looking at things to see if there was anything obvious on the vmware side as the servers that control those applications are VM's,
They have 2 Vmware servers, both ESX 3.5 Dell Poweredge 2950 servers and a dell md3000i iscsi san is where the vm's are located.
I have alot to look at, but one thing i noticed was that they are only using 1 nic for vm network. The SAN is connected on a separate NIC which also only has one nic.
I checked the performance monitoring and the average on both servers for the Network usage is about 2000kbs(2 megs). It sometimes spikes to 10 megs
Its a 1 gigabit card and it is going into a 1 gigabit switch.
Theres only 6 or 7 vm's on each server. But some of the VM's are SQL and Exchange
Normally if i had the choice I would nic team 2 nics for more throughput.
I guess my question is this, if the performance monitor says that the vmware server is only averaging 2 megs and never spikes above 10 megs, then can I assume I have plenty of bandwidth and that 1 nic isnt causing a bottleneck for the vm's?
Or is it possible that the 1 nic cant handle multiple things at once and bandwidth doesnt really matter? So there still could be a bottleneck?
Thanks
Mike
