Hello and thank you for taking the time to read this. Here is my current situation:
Macbook Pro Late 2011
2.2 GHZ Intel Core i7
8GB RAM
OS X Lion
VMWare Fusion version: 4.1.3 (730298)
I currently have a hardware based hard drive that OS X Lion is loaded on. This also stores the VMWare Fusion application.
I have a Crucial 255 GB M4-CT256M4SSD1 SSD drive also installed. This SSD is connected in the Superdrive bay using an adapter. The importance of this is that the SSD drive is using the serial-ata connection. The SSD drive has the physical virtual guest files on it.
I have run a few performance tests on the SSD with TRIM on and off. The Write speed came in at 245.9 MB/s and the Reads came in at 499.6 MB/s. This tells me the drive seems to be functioning correctly. There is roughly 122 GB of space available on the SSD drive.
My problem happens when I'm running just one guest. The guest is configured to use 4GB of memory with 2 processors. The guest is a Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit machine. In my opinion, it should run very fast and smoothly. Unfortunately, this is not happening. The performance is terrible. The machine does not boot any faster. Once I try to use the guest machine, it performs worse than when it was on the physical hard drive. It will just seem to freeze and do nothing for a minute and then be fine. I might be able to get a few minutes or even an hour before this starts happening again.
Does anyone have any advice on this?
