vSphere HA 5 Election Process and vCenter Server

$

Dear Folks,

Please help me to clarify the following doubts with vSphere HA 5.

For election process i understand it elect master based on maximum datastore visibility. Else it will check MOID of hosts (as per my knowledge this id will be identified from vCenter at the time of election process). Which means vCenter is getting involved in electing master. Please correct me if im wrong.

Now talking about Master ESXi server, he is the one responsible for initiated failover if any slave ESXi failed (lets assume power failure).

But if master ESXi itself failed, before the VM can be failovered to other hosts, election process must be held to choose the master accross available slaves. Once master has been elected the failover will be initiated. Again correct me if I'm wrong.

So Lets consider the following scenario:

I have 3 node ESXi cluster. Now in this cluster host 1 is my master server which is also hosting vCenter Virtual Machine.

In this case if the host 1 (master hosting vcenter vm also) failed, my entire cluster will go down? as to choose the master accross available slave node it is not possible as the vCenter also failed with my master host??

PLEASE NOTE I'M NOT SAYING IF VCENTER IS DOWN MY CLUSTER WILL NOT WORK. BUT I'M DOUBTING IF MASTER NODE FAILS ALONG WITH VCETNER THEN MY CLUSTER COULD GO DOWN!!!!

If i have not clearly explained the scneario please let me know i can clarify further. Please help me to clarify this doubt..

This doubt even I couldn't get clarified in my VCP training itself

Thanks a lot...

hari.

Physical disk speed is chastening

Hi together!

I need to add a physical disk (eSATA) to a Ubuntu VM to access the data on it. It works cute so far but the sequential transfer speed (read) doesn't exceed ~25MB/s. I've also tested another hdd with a XP VM and the results are equal.

Any suggestions how to break this limit?

Thinapp and Windows 8

Hi,

I try to thinapp few applications in Windows Server 8 Beta and all fails (error in attach).

Packages was made under Windows 2003/2008 don't run.

Maybe somebody had the same issue and resolve it?

Will VMWARE support Thinapp in Windows 8?

Thanks

Hello

I have version 8 of VM Ware Workstation. I installed a legal version of Windows Seven and Windows XP. The problem is that I have freezes, they do not last long but are quite annoying.

I have 6 GB of RAM and an i7 930. I noticed these freezes corresponded to a sudden increase in CPU utilization on the virtual machine, it rises at once to 100% then back down normally ....

A friend of mine also has this problem ....

How to remedy it? There was there a specific option?

Thank you for reading, I wish you a good day

Bonjour

Hello,

we are using PowerCLI scripts for deploying virtual machines. After updating to vCenter 5 the cmdlet is reporting the message below. We didn’t find any information about this message in your KB and in the internet (community etc.):

„The Operation is not supported on this object” -> in the original message below you find the german version "Der Vorgang wird für dieses Objekt nicht unterstützt".

Cause our Windows Server deployment isn’t possible in the known PowerCLI way at the moment is there anyone who is able to give me an information what solves this error?

PowerCLI Version 5.0.1

Windows Server 2008R2

vCenter 5.0 u1

ESXi 4.1 u1

Automating configuration of VUM via PowerCLI / PowerShell? Impossible?

$
0
0

The original VUM cmdlets provided the commands "get-vumconfig" and "set-vumconfig", allowing one to register the VUM plugin and then configure (mostly) it from a script.

Can this be done? I have looked for registry entries on the vCenter (VUM is installed on a seperate server) but I can't locate any hint of the plugin config there. It's infuriating!  How can one, for example, remotely control the location of UMDS servers and enable or disable VUM patch downloads via PowerShell?

I really hope someone can shed some light on this because after 3+ days of searching I have precisely nothing.

Many thanks to whomever can help.

Sudden decrease of VM performance

$

Hi all,

I am quite a newbie with vmware ESXi and today something strange happened to me. I am running only one VM for test purposes in one host. This VM uses Windows server 2003 as the OS. I have been working with that VM for weeks without any problem. I usually open a Console with vCenter to work on it. Today, suddenly, the mouse inside the VM started to go really slow and at the end I could not even move it. If I clicked something it took around a minute to actually click inside the VM. I powered it off and on and it took almost 10 minutes to boot! (normally it takes less than a minute). I have been checking in vCenter the performance and everything is normal and no limits are reached.

If that same VM is migrated to another host, everything works perfectly, without any problem. As soon as it goes back to the previous host, it is annoyingly slow. I tried to ping it to check if the network was the problem but I get 1 ms of latency. The storage should not be the problem since I am accessing to the same storage in both hosts over the same ports.

Does anyone have a clue what could be happening or where should I look to get more information?

Thanks!

php sdk: Can't get vapp by id

$

Hi,

We have switched from using the Java SDK due to its slow login times, so have moved to php.

The problem is there doesn't seem to be equivalent functions in the PHP SDK. eg

We want to minimize the amount of input we give to tools / scripts, so to power on a vapp for example, all we want to give as input is the vapp id without having to specify everything like the vdc name, org name etc.

Is there any documentation on how to do this, ie do the following Java code, in php, the only input being the vappId (urn:vcloud:vapp:xxxxxxxx)

Vapp vapp = Vapp.getVappById(vcloudClient, vappId);

DotNet C# Sample - SSL3_GET_RECORD:wrong version number

$

Hi,

using Converter 5.0.0-470252 and SDK 5.0.0-470252

I try running the DotNet Sample from the SDK.

I used two ways:

* Windows XP SP3 with VS2005 and .Net 2.0

* Windows 7 SP1 with VS2010 SP1 and .Net 4.0

I get following runtime error and can not send any jobs to the conversion server:

Caught SoapException -  Actor :  Code : ServerFaultCode Detail XML : <detail><Sy
stemErrorFault xmlns="urn:converter" xsi:type="vim25:SystemError" xmlns:vim25="u

L Exception: error:1408F10B:SSL routines:SSL3_GET_RECORD:wrong version number</v
im25:reason></SystemErrorFault></detail>
ERROR: Failed to submit P2V Conversion Job.

I tried running the server on http as a workaround which I could not solve doing.

I did changing the server configuration at C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware vCenter Converter Standalone\converter-server.xml and restarting the Server-Service

- ssl node section can not be removed as told -> service will not restart

- ssl subnodes removed, server took default certs -> it still tried running ssl on somewhere defined certs?

- all usessl properties turned to false -> server still wanted to use certs ... ?

- I generated and trusted self signed certs for server (since the delivered one will not work at all), did not solve the problem but cert problem went away

- tried managing the endpoints (e) using httpOnly or httpAndHttps ...

- tried putting debug to logging property -> log said it does not understand debug

- taking away ports for 443 did not work

- Firewall on the server is turned of

How and where can I change the SSL version?

How can I modify the server config to run in http mode?

How can I send a job running using a commandline tool or the Soap-Interfaces?

Regards.

Disk thrashing on Host and poor guest performance

$

Hi all

We have a Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise x64 host with 48GB memory, First data partition is 375GB (RAID1 120GB free) and second is 558GB (RAID1 50GB free)

Windows is managing the paging file and has set a 50GB pagefile on each data partition.

VMware server has 40GB reserved and is set to fit all virtual machine memory into reserved host ram.

We currently have 8 VMs running without an issue, using 32GB

When we start up a 9th, it takes a long time to load up and there is a significant amount of Hard Faults/sec that eventually recede to zero (after about 15/20 minutes) but performance of the 9th and the other VMs is affected - high CPU and poor overall performance exhibited as websites are slow to respond and timeout.

During all this the host CPU is not stressed

The VM starting up runs perfectly fine on my local machine using VMware player, and is a sysprepped image of the the other VMs.

Does anyone have any observations on why the disk thrashing is occuring and what I can do to remedy it?

Thanks

Hello dears

In general after starting server i cannot see my raid storage in 'Storages' in ESXi 5.0

Step by step description:

  1. Server was started from ssd disk w/o storage (cause of bug failure of RAID controller).
  2. After fixing this and with raid in Online state (w/o rebuild and so on) i have this in devices tab (so device is mounted):

But a dont see my store in datastores view

VIX plug-in hangs at connect to server

Hi,

I just tried to use the VIX Plug-In for the first time to copy some files to a guest, but the Workflow run seems to hang at the action connectToServer. The workflows don't fail, they just keep running. I have some workflows running for almost two hours now. Unfortunately there aren't any errors in the vCO logfiles.

For testing I created a little workflow running only the connectToServer action. The connection doesn't work there neither. Has anyone experienced this before? I'm using vCO 4.2.1.

Thanks a lot.
