Cannot turn off multiple monitors in Windows 8

VMWare Fusion + Win8 worked (MBP 15" Retina) - worked just fine. I have a 2nd monitor (Thunderbolt display)

 

When I resized the VMWare windows the display resolution of Win8 was adjusted. When I went into full screen mode - the window went full screen on the current display. Exactly how I wanted it.

 

For some reason (might be my fault) - suddenly when I go full screen Windows now spans both monitors and I can't turn it off in Windows - even when I select "Display desktop only on Monitor 1" in Windows 8 / screen resolution", I stil get Windows 8 on both monitors.

 

Also the automatic resolution adjustment does not work properly anymore, and sometimes the guest display flickers. I also hear a sound of a device being connected and disconnected in Windows.

 

How can I get back to a single screen?

Hello All, I am starting to see some MPN warnings in my vmkwarning.log on one of my hosts. Has anyone else experienced these; I am thinking it could translate into a bad memory chip or some hardware component.

 

Any help would great and many thanks in advance.

Time sync in Debian guest

Hello,

 

   I have various virtual servers with the vmware tools installed (VMwareTools-8.6.0) under Debian 6.0 x64 and these are running over physical host with ESXI 5.0.0.

 

   All the ESXI have ntp configure and working (tested that this is ok), and, noramally, the vmware tools work with the time sync, but, after a time, some virtual servers start a delay in time, a few minutes, 1-5, differing these time between virtual machines running over the same ESXI.

 

   If i restart the vmware tools in the guests, the time syncs perfect, but why don't do this automatically?

 

   I think various things:

 

   1.- Why the vmware tools not sync correctly the date?

 

   2.- Can I do a vmwre tools restart every night for keep the time sync? this have an other troubles?

 

   3.- What is best, vmware tools or an ntp service?

 

   4.- According to  http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1006427 why the vmware tools are bad for this reason?

vCenter Server Appliance - network settings

Hi,

 

i have a vCenter Server Appliance 5.1.0.5300 Build 947940.

 

After upgrading vom 5.0.x i have the following problem:

 

Networking - Address: My appliance has got a hostname, IPv4 default gateway, two preferred DNS servers, static IPv4-address and netmask (IPv6 address type auto). When i reboot the appliance something happens: After the reboot i see the subnet mask (255.255.255.0) in the field preferred DNS server and the alternate dns server field is empty. This results in errors because there is no more name resolution

 

Anyone else having this problem?

Deploying VM's using template across datacenters using Java API

Hi,

 

When we try to create a VM in datacenter X through Vsphere client using a template datacenter Y, then the screen shows a warning message saying

 

"The virtual machine uses network nw1. since the operation is being conducted across datacenters, this network may not be the same network on the source and destination. This is because network names are unique within a datacenter."

 

I want to know if this is possible at all even if the datacenters are on the same network because of the last sentence in the above warning message?

 

If this is possible, then I can proceed to find out how the same can be done using Java API.

vmware user for years, first time using player and an image gets corrupted?

Hi Folks,

 

As the title suggests, i've used vmware server/esxi (and virtualbox) for years.  For some reason I installed player on a new laptop and within a week have somehow managed to corrupt a disk image to the extent that it doesn't seem recoverable.  Two (sets of) questions

 

- Is player in any way less robust in terms of maintaining disk image integrity than server?  This system (new windows 8 box) has shut itself down once or twice b/c i forgot to change the windows update settings, but aside from that the images do not undergo much disk activity such that it would have been 'busy' when it shut down.  There were several occasions where i *abused* my vmware server images (both running windows guests), constantly shutting down on running systems and never had an issue with the disk image file itself...not one time.  Of course the guest filesystem took a dookie every now and again, but no surprises there.

 

- How do disk images get corrupt to the point that they are unusable?  I know the snapshots add complexity, but isn't a 20gb preallocated disk basically just a big block bucket?  What would corrupt it to the point that vmware-dismanager can't successfully repair it?

USB3.0 problem (The connection for the USB Device "......" was unsuccessful)

Hi,

 

At the beginning I need to mention that on my old configuration everything works ok. But a couple of days ago I bought a new Dell laptop without USB2.0 ports. Now I have unsolvable problem.

 

Configuration:

Dell Inspiron 7520

Win 7 (host)

4x USB3.0

VMware Player 5.0.1 build-894247 ->running Instant Contiki (Ubuntu).

 

I tried to connect USB device but I got error every time "The connection for the USB Device "......" was unsuccessful". Attached image...

Device is USB2.0.

 

Until now I didn't find a solution.

 

Any suggestion will be very helpful.

Deep Recursion in Perl API Script

We're running vSphere CLI 5.0.0 on a RHEL 5.8 server for many things, including VM backups.  The backup script hasn't changed in quite some time, but now I'm seeing the following error messages on one on my datastores: Deep recursion on subroutine "ComplexType::deserialize" at
/usr/lib/perl5/5.8.8/VMware/VICommon.pm line 2346.  As far as I can tell the datastore is fully operational & it has no obvious errors.  I'm not sure if this is a true problem which is killing some VM backups, or if it is just a warning. Does anyone know what is causing this, and where I can go to further research it?

isDeployed returns unexpected value

When I have a vApp that has some powered on VMs and some powered off VMs, vapp.isDeployed() returns true. This doesn't make sense, since I would expect all the VMs to be powered on when the vApp says it is deployed. Is there any way to get a boolean allDeployed : {true=>all VMs are powered on, false=> one or more VMs are not powered on} without retrieving all the VMs in the vApp and checking them one by one?

How do I create a patch group of all available patches from a category on a certain date?

 

The intention is to create a patch group of all Windows OS patches available at the end of the week of patch Tuesday, then use it to scan and patch all dev machines that weekend. The following weekend after testing is complete, the same patch group will be used to scan and patch staging. One more week and  more testing, then same patch group will be used to test production. 

 

The trouble is that I am not finding a method to capture the patch set and hold it static through the cycle.

Error Logging Into Physical Workstation

Hi All,

 

I have recently upgraded from View 4.x to 5.x. I am having trouble with a couple of the Windows 7 physical workstations we have published through View. The issue is that if a user does not logoff their session from the physical computer (ie. Start | Logoff) they receive an error stating the machine is unavailable when trying to connect to it from the View client. This issue never existed prior to View version 5.x. We could always logon to a workstation that was simply locked. I have reinstalled the view client on the workstations with the latest version as well to rule that out as a problem.

 

Not sure if I am missing something simple here but this is a real nuisence for those users who work on a physical desktop all day and then try and reconnect again at night from home since at the end of the day they are forced to close down everything, logoff and then start over again when they make the remote connection through View from home or the road.

 

Any insight, thoughts or assistance would be great!

Copy .vmdk guest VM to USB HDD

Hello VM community,

 

I've come across a few forum posts about this but was hoping for some definitive answers and maybe some step by step commands or links on how to do this. The Windows Server '08 VM guest in question lives on a server running ESXi 4.0. I would just copy from server to server via vCenter but my trial licensing expired on my two host servers and I haven't been able to install my paid licensing because my old host is not ESXi 5 yet so my two host servers are not connected anymore and so on...

 

I'm planning to upgrade my old ESXi 4 server to 5 and want to backup one VM guest server in case anything breaks

 

I basically wish to:

-mount a USB hard drive to the ESXi 4 VM host via the CLI (I'm guessing)

-copy the VM guest to the USB hard drive

-unmount the USB drive

-attach it to my other VM host server running ESXi 5.0

-copy the VM guest from the USB drive to the ESXi 5.0 server and boot it up to ensure it worked.

 

Any help or links to articles anybody's found would be very greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Orchestrator 3.2.1 license key and/or upgrade advice

I have an old 3.2.1 system which I need to access and export all of the workflows from.  Unfortunately the license key file has expired on this system.  It also has lifecycle manager installed so when I attempt to upgrade I get a warning about it and the install stops.  I can't login to uninstall lifecycle manager since it is expired.  Really I just need to get in and export the workflows so if somone on here has the power to give me a new license file that would be great.

esxi 5.1 не видит сет карту

Всем привет.

Есть сервер на базе  Intel p4304bt http://ark.intel.com/ru/products/67306/Intel-Server-System-P4304BTLSHCNR , esxi5.1 установился всё подцепил, но как я позже обнаружил, не видит 2ую сет карту. В bios всё включено, индикаторы горят.

До этого стоял win server 2012 2е карты работали!!!!!

Подскажите что сделать можно?

UCS iSCSI Boot related question- use iscsibootvSwitch for Datastores as well?

VMware - ESXi 5.0

H/W - Cisco UCS Blades

Stg - NetApp (iSCSI)

 

I just got iscsi Boot working for our ESXi hosts (running on Cisco UCS Blades). It works great but I have a "best practice" question now.

 

I see that VMware auto-creates a new vswitch named "iScsiBootvSwitch" and assigns the vnic used for iscsi boot .. ok, makes sense. The question I have is, should I use that same vswitch for VMFS Datastore traffic as well or create a dedicated vNIC in my UCS Profile which I can dedicate to another vSwitch? I assume it'll work if I use the iscsi vswitch for datastore traffic, I just didn't know if there were any downsides to doing this.

 

One other slight issue is now I also have two separate initiator groups on the NetApp - one for accessing the VMFS datastore LUNs and another for accessing the iscsi boot LUN. Looks like I may have to put the new initiators (from the ESXi hosts doing iscsi boot) into the existing initiator group and assign that igroup to the iscsi host LUN as well. NetApp does not allow an initiator to be in more than one initiator group, unfortunately.

vCenter Server Appliance (vcsa) Services enable/disable

Hello,

 

I'm thinking about using only the sso and web components of the vcsa, especially in upgrade scenarios. Is there a way to permanently disable all unused services (vCenter, Inventory, Dump Collector, Syslog etc.) to keep the footprint as low as possible and to avoid having an unused vCenter in sso?

View Composer "database not supported" error

Trying to install View Composer (v3.0.0-691993) on my vCenter 5.1 server that has SQL Server 2012 SP1. I have a 64-bit DSN pointing to my View database called VMwareView and the connectivity test works. I’m using SQL authentication. At the setup screen where Composer asks for DSN information I enter my info and get an error message: “The database specified is not supported by [ProductName]”. I tried pointing my DSN to a SQL 2008 server with an empty VMwareView database and got the exact same message so I don’t think the issue is related to version of SQL server. No issues with vCenter and SQL 2012.

 

Any workarounds for this issue?

Copy paste from guest to host strips out formatting

Windows Workstation 9.0.1 build-894247 on Windows 7 x64 host.    Any VM I run, if I copy paste from a web page into a Word doc on the host, ALL formatting is getting stripped, just plain text only.  No bolding, italics, URLs, graphics, nothing.

 

My VMs are mostly Windows 7 but also some server OSs.

 

Anyone else experienced this or know what might be causing this ?  I first noticed this with WS 7, then upgraded to 9 and it is still doing it.

Virtual machines won't reboot

I am having a problem with Windows XP guests hanging up when told to reboot remotely.  They start the process but then hang until I open the VMWare Server 2 console and actually launch the console of the guest machine.  As soon as I click in the guest machine's console window, the machine continues the reboot process.

 

If this was only happening on one or 2 machines it wouldn't be that big of a deal but we have 50+ machines on various hosts all exhibiting the exact same behavior.

 

Any ideas as to what could be causing the hang?
